What are the differences between Green Class and Ordinary Class on the Shinkansen?
Green Class is Japan's version of "First Class," offering a more premium and tranquil travel experience compared to the standard Ordinary Class. Here are the key differences to help you choose the right pass for your trip:
- Seating Layout: Green Cars feature a 2+2 seating configuration, meaning wider seats and more aisle space. Ordinary Cars typically use a 2+3 layout.
- Comfort: Green Class seats offer deeper reclining angles, motorized leg rests (on many models), and significantly more legroom.
- Environment: Green Cars are generally much quieter and less crowded, making them ideal for long-distance travel or working on the go.
- Peak Season Advantage: During busy periods like Golden Week or New Year, Ordinary Cars can become very crowded. Having a Green Pass makes it significantly easier to secure a reservation in a peaceful environment.
Note: Some regional Shinkansen (Sanyo/Kyushu) may have 2+2 seating in Ordinary cars, but the Green Class still offers superior service and more spaciousness.
