Can I Refund a JR Pass After Exchange in Japan? | Important Rule

Can I get a refund for my JR Pass after I have already exchanged the voucher in Japan?

No, once an Exchange Order (voucher) has been exchanged for the actual Japan Rail Pass in Japan, it is 100% non-refundable and cannot be changed or canceled.

This is a strict policy set by the Japan Railways (JR) Group, and the following rules apply without exception:

  • Post-Exchange Status: Once you present your voucher at a JR exchange counter and receive the physical pass, the voucher is considered "consumed" and its financial value is transferred to the JR system.
  • Circumstances: Refunds cannot be processed after exchange for any reason, including:
    • Train delays or service suspensions due to weather (typhoons, snow, etc.).
    • Sudden changes in travel plans or illness.
    • Loss or theft of the physical pass.
  • Validity: Please ensure that your travel dates and the type of pass (Ordinary vs. Green) are correct before you sign the exchange form at the JR counter in Japan.

If you have not yet exchanged your voucher and it is still within its validity period, please refer to our standard refund policy for unused vouchers.
