Shinkansen Luggage Rules: Mandatory Oversized Baggage Reservation

Do I need to make a seat reservation if I'm traveling with oversized baggage on the Shinkansen?

Yes, reservations are mandatory if you plan to bring "Oversized Baggage" onto the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, or Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen lines. This rule was implemented to enhance passenger safety and comfort by providing dedicated storage space for large suitcases.

What is "Oversized Baggage"?
Baggage is classified as oversized if the total dimensions (Length + Width + Height) are between 160 cm and 250 cm.

  • Under 160 cm: No reservation needed; can be placed in overhead racks.
  • Over 250 cm: Not allowed on the Shinkansen due to safety regulations.

How to Book:
When making your seat reservation at a ticket machine or window, you must specifically select a "Seat with an Oversized Baggage Area" (usually located at the very last row of each car).

  • Cost: There is no extra charge for this reservation when using a JAPAN RAIL PASS.
  • Penalty: If you bring oversized baggage without a reservation, the train conductor will charge a 1,000 JPY penalty fee, and your bag may be moved to a different storage area.

If the dedicated seats are fully booked, you will need to choose a different train time. We recommend booking in advance, especially during peak travel seasons.
