JR Pass Child Age Policy: Rules for Infants and Children

What is the child age policy for the Japan Rail Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass offers discounted rates for children. Eligibility is determined based on the child's age on the date the Exchange Order (voucher) is issued by JTB Canada.

  • Infants (Ages 0-5): Travel for FREE if they sit on an adult's lap and do not occupy a separate seat. However, if an infant requires their own reserved seat, you must purchase a Child JR Pass.
  • Children (Ages 6-11): Eligible for the Child JR Pass, which is 50% of the adult fare.
  • Adults (Ages 12+): Must purchase a full-fare Adult JR Pass.

Common Scenario: If your child is 11 years old on the day we issue the voucher, but turns 12 before you arrive in Japan or during your stay, they can still use the Child Pass for the entire duration of the trip. The age at the time of "issue" is the only one that counts.
