1. Legal Obligation for Entry

Under the Japanese Nationality Act and Immigration Control Act, Japanese citizens are legally required to use their Japanese passport when entering and exiting Japan. You should not attempt to enter Japan with your Canadian passport if you still hold Japanese citizenship.

2. JR Pass Eligibility Scenarios

• Entering with a Japanese Passport: You will be processed as a Japanese national. Therefore, you MUST meet the "10 consecutive years of residency abroad" requirement and provide official proof (such as a Certificate of Overseas Residence). Without this 10-year proof, you cannot use the JR Pass.
• The "Temporary Visitor" Stamp: To use a JR Pass as a "Foreign Tourist," you need a "Temporary Visitor" stamp in your passport. However, Japanese immigration will NOT issue this stamp on a Japanese passport.

Critical Warning for Dual Citizens:
The most common mistake is entering Japan with a Japanese passport but only having an Exchange Order intended for "Foreign Nationals." If your entry record shows you entered as a Japanese citizen, the JR staff cannot issue the pass unless you provide the 10-year residency documents. Showing your Canadian passport at the counter afterward will not help, as your legal status for that visit is already fixed as "Japanese."
