Can I use the automatic ticket gates with the Japan Rail Pass?
Yes, the modern Japan Rail Pass is compatible with automatic ticket gates.
Since the system update in 2020, the pass is issued as a magnetic ticket (similar in size to a standard train ticket), allowing for much smoother entry and exit at stations.
- How to use: Simply insert your pass into the slot at the automatic gate. Don't forget to take it back as it pops out on the other side!
- Reserved Seat Tickets: If you have a separate seat reservation ticket, you only need to insert the JR Pass itself into the gate. However, at some Shinkansen gates, you can insert both tickets together.
- Manned Gates: You can still use the manned (staffed) gates if the automatic gate has an issue or if you need assistance from a station officer.
Please be careful not to leave your pass behind in the machine, as it cannot be reissued if lost.
