Yes, the modern Japan Rail Pass is compatible with automatic ticket gates.

Since the system update in 2020, the pass is issued as a magnetic ticket (similar in size to a standard train ticket), allowing for much smoother entry and exit at stations.

• How to use: Simply insert your pass into the slot at the automatic gate. Don't forget to take it back as it pops out on the other side!
• Reserved Seat Tickets: If you have a separate seat reservation ticket, you only need to insert the JR Pass itself into the gate. However, at some Shinkansen gates, you can insert both tickets together.
• Manned Gates: You can still use the manned (staffed) gates if the automatic gate has an issue or if you need assistance from a station officer.

Please be careful not to leave your pass behind in the machine, as it cannot be reissued if lost.
